Oooh, I didn't know that this expression is used in other languages as well. (In German it's graue Eminenz.) I don't believe there's an English equivalent - or is there?

No, I don't think there's an English equivalent for it. There isn't even a Dutch equivalent. We simply use the untranslated French. I didn't know it's used in German, but then again I had German one hour a week for two years. That isn't much.
