Read in De Standaard this weekend:

The Belgian government has decided to simplify the laws that surround the protected profession of "restaurateur" or restaurant keeper. To be able to open a restaurant you must have followed a cook's training. But if you sell light meals that training isn't necessary -- when you serve vol-au-vent with bread for instance. When you serve vol-au-vent with frites, on the other hand, the degree is needed again. Same with serving goulash with frites: if you use a paper plate you don't need to be a certified cook, but you need to be one if you serve them on a real plate.

And that's why in a real "frietkot" (that would be our equivalent of a fish-and-chips-shop) you'll never find tables or plates, but you can still eat goulash with frites.

I thought it rather amusing when I first read it. We are really the country to come up with laws like this.

We'll see if they can actually make the laws easier. ;-)
