Worries

The second ultrasound didn't go according to the set plan of "everything's fine and baby is growing as should". Everything was fine and the baby was growing as should, but the image showed some tiny spots that asked for a second opinion. After some wait – during which we were reassured that all the measurements were good and that everything they could see was indeed fine, apart from that tiny little thing that she couldn't place – the second opinion was as cautious as the first and advised to have an amniocentesis.
There is probably nothing to worry about and there's a fair chance baby is fine, but this is still a procedure that'll keep me away from school for three days next week. I had to bite back my tears. Luckily P. can take it in his stride, focussing on the reassurance that we're worrying about something that'll probably turn out to be nothing (which were sort of the exact words of the second opinion). I'm trying administration mode: making sure my various schools and classes know I won't be teaching next week.
But I'll be fighting back tears when I have to retell the story to co-workers wanting to know why I'll be absent next week.

I really hope everything turns out just fine. Try not to worry too much, I know that's easier said than done. Good luck next week!

I still have a lot of things lined up over the weekend that will keep my brain occupied. Travel is the hardest, because that's when you start to mull over things.

*hugs*

You can be economical with the truth with your co-workers if that's easier for you. There'll probably be fewer questions than you expect now.

I'll be sending lots of good thoughts your way. If you want to talk some more, drop me a line.

Thank you. Apparently most colleagues don't really wonder why I'll be absent, so I didn't give any details. The procedure is scheduled for Monday. Right now I'm trying to focus on getting through that -- might drop you a line after to say how it went. We won't get the actual results until a couple of weeks later, so I'm trying to ban it from my thoughts, and taking one step at a time. Baby seems to enjoy him/her-self inside.
