Do the lines point the way to different genres of literature? Only place I've seen that used in the States is hospitals to guide you to certain medical departments.
Indeed, they point to different bits in the library; not really different genres, but children's books, CDs, DVDs, toilets, and some other services that are located in the same building. It's mainly done because this is a temporary location for the library while they're working on the real one on the other side of the square. With the coloured lines people would still find their favourite books. :-) It's widely used in hospitals here as well. In libraries I've only seen it to guide children to their part of the library.
