Sorry if you've read an incomplete version of this post. I hit return too quickly.

My pupils have discovered Facebook (as has the rest of the world with internet access). Since they're all still in primary school, none of them is thirteen, and they're doing inappropriate things on Facebook with regard to Facebook's terms of use. I prefer not to add them until they're well away from primary school and my classroom, so I've been trying to explain why I keep them locked out of my profile for now. I realise that the work-private-dichotomy I use to make myself clear, isn't the best excuse. Facebook is always public, and I'd say hi to my pupils on the street as well. But there's also my headteacher, and until that person comes up with an official stance on social networking with pupils, I prefer not to engage in conversations that later might be deemed inappropriate.

I think ignoring them is the right decision - it's a bit like seeing them about in town doing something a little naughty and leaving them to it.

I got a facebook invite from one of last year's pupils - she was careless enough or too trusting to give facebook access to her email address book and there was her English teacher, with a slightly unflattering Polish nickname...

I got a reply the other day of one of my pupils. I think she understood why I prefer not to add her...
