The distinctive smell of Sinterklaas is not that of freshly baked speculaas, nor that of Spanish oranges, but it is the smell of a new doll coming out of its packaging. How far back I get transported, getting a whiff of that plastic smell in my nose.

Only tangentially related: Today in the supermarket I saw the first seasonal products, i.e. the traditional baked goods for the Christmas season.

Sinterklaas is not allowed to make an appearance before the first of November. I bet the shops will start halloweening in a week or so, when Autumn begins.
