Thoughts in the margin
Sep. 15th, 2010 11:01 amWhen bishops and pope say they are deeply saddened by the report of the commission investigating sexual abuse in the Belgian Catholic Church, they always imply that anger is a mortal sin. Having reached the higher echelons of the Catholic structure, they have moved beyond these carnal passions. Even though they should be humbled by the graveness of the crime, they keep emphasizing their moral superiority in the choice of their words. And again it's a slap in the face of the victim, who does feel this anger and hatred.
Stefaan De Clerck, Minister of Justice and Christen-Democrat, in De Morgen: "The Church in Flanders must become a Church of the people, the laity, not one of structures and institutions."* I believe they already tried it hundreds of years of ago. It's called Protestantism. The institution Church has never been of the people. Do read Philip Pullman's books or Frank Herbert's Dune series to begin to understand the workings of an institution that's been in state for thousands of years.
* My translation: "De kerk in Vlaanderen moet weer van de mensen, van de leken worden, niet van de structuren en de instituten."
