While in Oxford, my daughter seems to have more of a social life than P. and I. We usually stay in, but Little Bit got invited to a birthday party. The birthday girl will turn two, and P. and I can tag along to mingle with the other parents. Now I have a question to put to the British people out there: is it common to bring a present to such a gathering? I'm not willing to go empty handed. The mother of the birthday girl has put a lot of effort in this thing, so according to Belgian standards it's only polite to bring something. But what does one bring?

By Swiss standarts... a gift to the birthday girl or some kind of cake?

By my standards: A small gift for the birthday girl and a little something for the hosts: a bottle of wine or chocolates or even flowers. If I know them well, something more personal. Possibly food for the gathering, but only after talking about it with the hosts and making sure that it's wanted.
