Is what I thought too. Because I've got colleagues on there as well, I usually think twice before I post anything on Facebook: no yapping about school going on there!
I'm still debating getting on facebook - it's not the social networking tool of choice in Germany and thus a little out of the way, but with my name being what it is I'm instantly findable. Even with all the privacy settings up to the max, I'm a bit worried that it might lead the wrong people, i.e. students, to livejournal - through my contacts on facebook who link to their livejournals (if that route is indeed possible).
I don't link to my LJ on Facebook, because that's something not meant for RL acquaintances. I yap on here about school, because I can't on Facebook. I wouldn't want my colleagues to read all my critiques.
Facebook's privacy settings aren't very clear. There's always the possibility people see what you said or uploaded through your friends. So I view Facebook as a pubic place where anyone can drop in. Still my privacy settings should make my profile only viewable to my friends. You can make your profile completely invisible and unsearchable, I believe.
A normal google search doesn't show your facebook account, but I don't know how visible you are to other facebook users - assuming you use the name there that I know. (I'm only checking this to see how it might work for me.)
Hmm, I'd just try it out, but with the internet being what it is, once the genie is out of the box, you can't stuff it back in...
Profiles that are only viewable by friends can't be searched for on google. Or I clicked somewhere to prevent it from showing up in a google-search. I don't remember how I did it, but it's possible.
Once you've got a Facebook account you can search for me there with my RL name or email-account.
I just noticed I made the weirdest typo in my previous reply. It must be a Freudian slip. Oops...
The way I look at Facebook is that it is that part of the real me on the web. So you do guard that in a way. You don't friend every Tom, Dick and Harry. Nor do you freely post pictures about yourself. But it is a place where you can be yourself, if only with those people you are most at ease with, but not in physical contact with.
Yep, same thing here: I've got colleagues and RL friends on there and even the odd online friend.
I do notice I have a better contact with some colleagues since Facebook. Because I'm not every day at the same school we can keep each other up to date and "chat" a little. On school there isn't much time for these things, and working together goes better when it also clicks socially I think.

And then there is this one colleague whom I know to be internet-savvy who spies on the pupils on the German social networking platforms of choice....
