A Flemish Winter
Nov. 23rd, 2008 11:17 pmWhen we were young we'd say Jesus was shaking out his duvet on days when snow fell. Nowadays the snow ends up on the television in less beautiful images. There's talk of chaos on the streets (on a Sunday!) and the weather girl explains in the studio we'll get more of the same tomorrow afternoon, and be careful out there in your cars.
I sit inside, watching the snow fall, knowing it'll be gone in the morning, because it isn't cold enough. Why should we complain? It hardly ever snows here anyway, and I don't have to go to work tomorrow. I can enjoy the freezing cold from high up on the fifth floor, watching out over the white city, suddenly silenced by the pack of snow landing over its inhabitants.

Date: 2008-11-24 05:21 pm (UTC)We're more pagan: In German Frau Holle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frau_Holle) does Jesus' job of shaking out her feather beds. (And that wikipedia article has told me lots more about her - I only know her from Grimm's Märchen and the snow thing.)
I had no trouble getting to school today, there was some slush left on the roads, but nothing to worry about. At school, it was a different story. Everyone was just soooo excited!

Date: 2008-11-25 07:38 am (UTC)I didn't expect you to not know her, if that makes sense, except in her snow-making capacity.
It all goes back to the stories we tell, doesn't it?
*hint, hint*
