Tacky songs tend to bring back memories more accurately than the good ones can. Maybe because you only like the tacky songs because of the fond memories related to them, whereas the good ones are simply liked for their musical qualities. "You'd sell your soul for a tacky song," sings Neneh Cherry. And yes we would, because it makes us dream and remember and look into an unsure future.

The songs we hear on the radio during Summer recess, transport one back to a childhood that never was. The Scorpions led me to believe that so far this has been a year of change. People around me are having babies, changing jobs, building houses: Everyone is going through these big life-changes phases. Maybe it's my age (I was born in the Summer of 1979 – you do the math), or maybe there is this life-changing force going around; nonetheless it has an impact on everyone.

Where most of these changes are of the garden-variety, my dear friend A. has chosen for a whole new life, complete with lady-friend and cat. Today he left the Belgian soil behind and headed for Geneva (okay, the French side of the border with Geneva). Even though we have this nice thing called the internet to keep in touch, part of me is convinced we said goodbye for ever. I've got a standing invitation to go and visit, but my growing bump and baby-to-be prevent me from packing my things and going when I've got time off from school. On the other hand, what should prevent me from visiting my friends?
