Of the five things that should be issued to every American on his or her 14th birthday I really wish I'd had access to #3: phone number of a super-cool, non-panicky adult (who will get you out of the jams your parents must never learn of). I'm convinced I would have walked the line much more often, and in the process would have become a more daring adult.
Instead I had access to #4, and stayed at home to listen to it on my brightly coloured walkman.
