Hildegard brought the parchment up to her eyes and held it horizontal in front of her face. Rays of light caressed the soft surface and made visible what only a moment before had been hidden. Neatly tucked in between numbers IC and CI the silvery letters appeared. The untrained eye couldn't read them, but her mind, open for any word, message or order from the one she served, had discovered them. Her eyes flew over the text and she savoured the sound of it in her head. She murmured to herself and thought about the first days after the discovery of the hidden entry. The parchment had been a treasure then, kept safe under her mattress of straw.
They had burned her at the stake for it. The muttering, the empty gaze in her eyes, her fingers frantically feeling the soft surface of books... The nuns didn't approve and wanted her gone. “Set an example,” it was called and Hildegard was the one to have to endure the heat of the fire. She had lost three of her toes and most of the hearing in her left ear, but the experience had strengthened her in her beliefs. This was her personal god coming to her through this specific entry, telling her his sacred name. She murmured the words once again: “Sanctificetur nomen tuum.”
