Theatre festival in town and I take my 3yo niece MK to see a play. Getting there is a bit harder than thought at first, because we end up at the wrong place (my fault entirely). With my arms full of little girl I rush for the tram and we make it just. Standing in line for our tickets MK does what she usualy does: watching what I do and not wanting to mingle with folk of her size. Those other kids are loud, obnoxious, and too touchy-feely for MK's taste. She just sits beside me and looks stupefied when someone tries to communicate with her. During the play I have the best behaved kid on my lap. I hear the dad behind me jammering to his daughter she has to be quiet or they'll leave. She proclaims for the entire audience she needs to pee. The mum right next to me is explaining away what happens on stage whenever her son asks her something. MK's gaze is fixed on the stage. She doesn't ask me to explain stuff. She only looks sideways when the other kids are really making too much noise for her, and twice she lets out such a profound sigh I think she'll reprimand them all. Near the end she whispers softly she needs to pee, but she can hold out for just a bit longer. Leaving, she's still as well behaved as ever, while other kids whine about being hungry and having to go to the toilet. I get admiring looks for having such a sweet little kid to walk around with. There might even be some jealousy.

Awww, she sounds lovely. Is she a little shy though as well?
It's kind of like how I used to be when I was about her age. I'd be as good as gold whenever I went anywhere with my parents, just kind of quiet and obedient but happy too etc, and my parents used to get people looking at them enviously too. I was nothing like that when we got back home though - I wasn't naughty I mean, but simply louder, chatty, more active. I was just really shy whenever we went out, which made everyone think I was amazingly well behaved!

She sounds just like you when you were young. When she's home she isn't overly naughty or anything, but more chatty and active. Shy kids really are the best (I was shy too, btw).
What's really funny, is that she's not only shy, but when she's looking at a play or a film, she is genuinely interested in what happens and hates it when she's interrupted. So she doesn't like other kids making noise around her when she's trying to watch something.
