"This is Belgian."
Jan. 15th, 2007 11:46 pmAparantly a sketch from the Flemish satirical program In de gloria made it onto Jay Leno. Mr. Leno had picked it up on YouTube and presents it as real on his show. In this clip you can see him present the item as a serious talkshow with a show host that can't hold it together in front of his guest.
Currently In de gloria is starting a second life in reruns on Belgian television. When an unknowing viewer trips over the program on his telly, he might be a bit shocked by what's going on there. It all looks like reality television, but it's too much. That's because it isn't real. The premise of In de gloria is driving the idea of reality television over the top. Unfortunately some people don't see through this, or don't check their source. After Jay Leno picked it up, the clip appeared on Dutch television and on the French network TF1. Actor Tom Van Dyck, who plays the talkshow host, has said he can't believe Jay Leno didn't know this was satire – and when you hear him introduce the clip you can wonder if that isn't tongue in cheek you're hearing.
First link in Dutch, second link to YouTube video. The clip from In de gloria is probably from 2001. The appearance with Jay Leno dates from a year back. Because of the reruns of In de gloria the Flemish newspaper De Standaard picked this story up again on their website. It's very funny to see how comments on YouTube on this actual clip have exploded since the appearance of the story on De Standaard online.
Thanks to Big Sis for providing the story.
