Two images of music
Nov. 29th, 2006 11:51 pmThey are out of place: A brass band playing tunes in front of the opera. If that's not enough, their uniforms reveal their origin. This is the army's brass band. Carrying their shiny copper instruments together with the greens of trousers and shirts, they look like mismatched soldiers of love. A peace corps trying to find a new goal in their collective lives since world conflicts have ceased to exist. Their superiors have turned themselves into managers, and are on the phone setting dates for gigs as we speak. They gather a bit of a crowd – people doing late shopping for Saint Nick's or early for Christmas. It must be the start of the festive season.
The guy with the big headphones probably didn't hear them. His headphones were to big. I've seen him before. He's a simple soul who's on the bus every now and then. I recognise the headphones. What I didn't know is that it isn't only the headphones that are oversized. In his right hand I notice a radio-cd-player. One of those old style portable things with built-in speakers. They come quite cheap and are still used in schools, because they're easy to carry from one classroom to the next, and play cd's. This guy isn't just carrying this thing from point A to point B, though. It's his discman. With this choice of portable music, he has thrown me back into 80s video clips, where hip-hoppers walk around in oversized trousers, carrying big soundmachines to play their pumping music.
