Most of the time it sounded like they were slaughtering cats upstairs. The croaking, squeaking or hoarse voices mingled with high heels on wooden floors and the rather unconventional use of the pianoforte, provided him with a daily portion of torture that was worthy of Dante’s hell. Or worthy of moving apartment. The only bright spot of living there, was that he probably paid penance for all his sins twice.
Except on Mondays. Mondays were different, because it was her day, the angelic voice. She sang about Oscar in an incomprehensible language that let its r’s roll and a’s climb to the ceiling. For this chorus of “tra la la” he endured five days of untrained wannabe singers. It was this voice that made him stay. The song, with its mocking chorus and its words he didn’t understand, went straight to his core – even though she accused him, Oscar. There was no other sin he needed to pay his five-day penance for than this one: to listen, and to languish for it.

Damn this is my life! Except that they don't sing above and there isn't any pianoforte...Bloody Mexicans!

So you chose "languish". I'm wondering now if the verb you looked for wasn't actually "to long for", but it's more emotional than sexual IMO.

"Languish" sounds very daring for a man, I mean it calls to my mind something very feminine and 19thish (when women were supposed to have languor diseases), very Marguerite Gautier, but it's interesting at the end of the day.

I ended up with languish, because it's what subconsciously I put their first, without knowing if I used it correct! I tried other words, but it this one seemed to fit best. To long for just isn't sophisticated enough for Oscar. He almost dies with knowing he wants this, but isn't allowed to! (And yes, that's very 19th century women-like behaviour, but men are allowed to have their emotions and uncontrollable desires as well.)

I didn't read that, but I did remember your Mexicans when writing. First I thought about my own singing, and then I remembered how you talked about the return of the Mexicans.

P.S.: Your writing in French sounds very poetic!
