Palazzo Barolo

franceslievens"Parla Italiano?" the old man asks. His back is hunched, but his eyes tell how eager he is to recount all there is to know about this little bit of Turin under his care.
"Un' poco, un' poco,' we reply, holding up thumb and index finger to indicate the two words we understand. It's enough for the old man to start on the adventure and tell us the story of the Barolos and their palazzo. Using only the words we understand and hand gestures that would make a true Italian proud, we see with our own eyes Napoleon Bonaparte enter the drawing room to be scolded by the madame of the house: "You are nothing but a little Italian from Corsica, where I am French nobility."
The old man's enthousiasm knows no limits and with regret we say our grazie and arrivederci and step through the glass door.
