On Thursday night I learned that those long hairs I tend to flush down the drain do not end up in the sewer, like I incorrectly thought they would. Instead they knot themselves around little metal bits that stick out on the inside of pipes. One hair doesn't matter so much, but more than a year and a half worth of them, they have linked themselves together into a big clump of hair, soap and toothpaste. Since I oppose to using chemicals to get the sink unclogged, there was nothing else to do than stick my fingers down the drain and pull the foul clump out.

Moral?
That'll teach me.
& Shit, I have too much hair.

Two things that'll help you:

Pango (http://www.hse24.de/Product-ID730014.html) or a cheaper version.

and

one of those sieve-like things you can put on top of the drain - it will collect most of the bits of hair which you can then put in the bin.

two answers:

Something like Pango doesn't work very well on hairs, because hey are really cluttered together, and best is to just chuck them in the bin.

Those sieve-like things don't fit in my sink...

But I resolved the problem anyway. ;-)

P.S.: Pango works the same as those old fashioned things to clear a drain (http://www.tiwos.nl/file_handler/photos/resized/view/403/Ontstopper.jpg). We have one of those and it's always the first thing we use.

Those Pango clones work much better than the old fashioned Pömpel - no, that's not the proper German term for it, but it's the one we use. They've got much more ooomph. But it's true that they don't do much for the hair that sticks around the cover of the drain.

We have a product here in America that is probably associated with Drain-O but non-chemical that guarantees to clear any clog with pressure.

The commercial shows a middle-American couple in their home's bathroom putting the product into a bowl full of water and then setting it off. The drain immediately clears and the water recedes, the woman says, "Hmmm... wonder where that went." Cut to a nice couple at a sidewalk restaurant enjoying a fine meal, and they are speaking French so you get the idea it's Paris. When suddenly this disgusting knot of hair and slop splats down in the middle of their table. The guy gets up and immediately begins to vehemently complain.... cut to a final showing of the product.

No doubt the company was using the political climate in the US that has at times been somewhat anti-French to make a point.

Sounds a bit like the thing [livejournal.com profile] sister_luck linked to.

For some reason I think that commercial is amusing. ;-)

I think in the American way of things this is a single shot product of compressed air in a can. In other words, you throw it away after you use it... :-/
