Maud Newton has provided proof that Scientology is in fact one big can of idiocy (and we're talking the big cans olives come in). This from their L. Ron Hubbard Bible:
Ron Hubbard’s Scientology: The Fundamentals Of Thought clearly states: "Unlike yellow and brown people, the white does not usually believe he can get attention from matter or objects. The yellow and brown believe for the most part that rocks, trees, walls, etc, can give them attention. The white saves people, prevents famine, floods, disease and revolution ... the yellow and brown races are not very progressive." And when you ask a Scientologist about this — which I did, although I couldn’t find any of the famous ones, so had to make do with an eerie, pasty lady on Tottenham Court Road — they don’t even have the grace to refute this bilge. They kind of simper at you, and say, "Well, people are a lot more spiritual in the far east."

(Quote from Zoe Williams' Guardian column)
Do click through to Maud's original post as well, if only for the great Holmes/Cruise-bashing.

Yep. Hubbard = asshat. Apart from the fact that he is spouting utter garbage, I find the whay it is phrased extremely offensive - "yellow and brown pople".

The random Scientologist's response actually shows how racial stereotypes aren't even perceived as racism by the person perpetuating them. You know, like "Jews are intelligent" and "People from Africa are always happy and smiling even if they live in absolute squalor".

To a certain extent we all have these stereotypes in our heads, but I hope that I'm aware of my prejudices and stereotypes - and can get past them.

And have you encountered one white person? Mostly they are percieved as ill. ;-)

I probably still have some prejudices in me that I don't know about. I try to get past them, but it's difficult sometimes. Just a couple of days ago I thought about the following: the class I tell that they are great kids will live up to that, but the class I tell they act like total irresponsible children will also live up to that. And still I tell the bad kids their behaviour is wrong and they keep behaving wrong because I hardly ever have something good to say about them.
It's the danger with prejudices: people tend to live up to them.

But what were we talking about again?

Oh yes, the terrible burden of expectations. Either you expect too much or too little. And of course, by scolding the kids you only re-inforce the bad behaviour. Here's an article by the BBC that sums it up pretty well - though it is sometimes hard to follow this advice. Unruly classes 'tamed by praise' (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/4584932.stm)

Ah thanks. It's a reminder of what I learned in teacher's training. Not always as easy to follow, as you correctly observed.

The more I learn about Scientology, the freakier I find it. My question is this, and I would love to find a Scientologist to ask it to. "How could anyone, with any common sense, believe in this load of bull?" It amazes me.

I don't know if Katie is following along just to make Tom happy, or if she truly wants to believe in that pseudo religion. It's disturbing and I can't help but feel kind of bad for her, even if she's openly agreeing to being subject to it. I still think she's been brainwashed. One too many stress tests, maybe?

Me too. I really can't understand how a honest-too-god Christian with seemingly her head fully attached to her body can fall for so much rubbish. I always considered Scientology a bit wierd, but right now? They plainly freak me out. (And how can you go along with it to make Tom happy? We don't want Tom to be happy. Who knows what he'll turn into then! Oh, and I don't think I could go on loving someone with freakish ideas.)

The beliefs of many people keep on amazing me. And I still wonder what is wrong in the world. *shakes head*
