Good News and Bad News
Mar. 25th, 2006 09:42 pmThe setting is my classroom. The time: the last period on a Friday afternoon. Present are the sixth formers, bright 11- and 12-year-old kids.
Me: Kids, I've got good news and bad news.
Kid #1: Oh, start with the bad news. Get it over with.
Me: You'll have to stay until ten past three, like you have to every day. The good news on the other hand is that I'll be leaving at half past two today.
Kid #2 puts his head on his desk and sulks.
Kid #3: Pff, that's two times bad news miss!
Kid #1: Yes, it is! That's no good news at all!
Me: But why? Aren't you glad when the teacher isn't there? I know I used to be!
Kid #2: We're glad when the regular teacher isn't there, but it's no fun when it's the morality teacher who's leaving early!
I love my 6th formers.

Date: 2006-03-27 11:25 am (UTC)They exploit the fact they're my favourites, though, but I don't mind. It's a class that's immediately very intimidated when I get mad at them for talking too long or not listening. Very sweet kids, very interested in everything I tell them and very very bright.
Today they asked me if they could do a little party on Friday (it's the last class before Easter break). They know I'll go along, because they're always so good in class. But I told them they had to come up with everything themselves. They're good enough for that. And hey, they should surprise me. :-)
