A European Union
Apr. 30th, 2004 11:55 pmStrange I would make an entry about it. But the iron curtain I saw tumbling down when I was ten has come down completely: in a couple of minutes 10 countries will become part of the European Union. Countries that were (are?) believed to be "Eastern European".
-- Oostbloklanden --
I've never been to any of them. It all seems so far away, although the media try their best at bringing it close to us, those other Europeans, those people that live in what's supposed to be "the capital of Europe". Europe is strange when you live in Brussels. It's a building made of glass, that gets regularly attacked by crows. It's people that don't pay taxes and earn way too much money. It's closed metro stations whenever there's a European top. Europe is also a good sign. It gives a counterpart for other "worldpowers". It makes it easier to travel, to work together with other countries. It's a direct link to what Europe was, so many many centuries ago, when cities had power and people travelled from one place to the next. But not many people travelled. Most were hungry and tried to grow a bit food in their garden.
Europe can also be about solidarity. But I find it hard to imagine.
