My companion during the three-week-trip through Québec (and for some time after that) has been Susanna Clarke's wonderful Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. Apart from the author's tiny mistake with regard to the existence of Belgium, this book is so well documented with fictive data that it's unbelievable to read. Or maybe just too believable to read. You start to wonder if there is some magic left in England after all.

Folks over on Crooked Timber must have thought the same thing when they decided to have an online seminar on Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. Check it out. They even provide the interested reader with a link to the pdf-file so you can read a hard-copy and make notes in the margins.
