The last pictures?
Nov. 29th, 2005 07:54 pmThey have protested, long and hard, Ossies and Wessies that wanted to keep the Volkspalast, wart in the eye of every Berliner who respects himself. It couldn't be and recently is decided to demolish this creation that mainly reminds us of Erich Honecker and the Big Brother attitude of the Stasi. What will they build instead on this prominent place in the middle of Berlin? The Stadtschloss, a building as big as the Louvre that has been standing on this exact spot for centuries until it got bombed during the war. Speaking of an anachronism and no money. I'd prefer the Volkspalast to stay where it is. It's a cancer that shows us how people can go astray, but also how we can overcome that. Unfortunately the fatalist in me says any protest will be too late and that under the cut you'll find what will be some of the last pictures of what once was the DDR's pride and joy.

I apologise for the bad quality of the pictures. The scanner has had its best days. It's one of the reasons I haven't posted pictures from Berlin before now.

And I think they have already removed all the asbestos in the last couple of years. Did I tell you that the Einstürzende Neubauten did a big project and concerts in there?
