Teenage terrorists
Nov. 11th, 2005 04:26 pmVery interesting post by danah boyd on a school blaming MySpace for the threats of some alienated youngsters. 'The school district is pissed and blames MySpace for enabling students to "post their thoughts and ideas" without surveillance. They are deciding whether or not to sue MySpace.'
Together with danah I'm smacking my forehead over this one and I agree with her ideas on peer pressure and validation. I'll try to add a couple of things later when I've thought about it.

Date: 2005-11-11 08:59 am (UTC)And didn't read your review. I went looking for it, because I didn't trust my own memory of not having read it. You wrote it when I went to berlin and because of the amount of people on my flist at the moment I skip posts when I'm not at home. I always figure that when something very important has gone on people will tell me anyway, like you do today. I'll read the review and post a comment. :-)

Date: 2005-11-11 10:48 am (UTC)Oh, and on that note: Parents should absolutely monitor their children's phonecalls, letters, emails and personal conversations at all times.
They might turn out to be terrorists. And it's absolutely necessary that the government does the same - with the adults. You know, because of the terrorists.
Oh, and we shouldn't be doing anything about the reasons why kids make threats like that. This world is perfect - we don't need no change, just better surveillance....

Date: 2005-11-11 10:56 am (UTC)Hohum, I actually thought you meant it. But the next sentence clarified it all. *smacks forehead*
I think MySpace actually intends that you make that pun. It started as a place where youngsters can make friends...
But the world is perfect, I completely agree with you on that one.

Date: 2005-11-11 01:04 pm (UTC)I pointed out on my LJ (http://www.livejournal.com/users/candlelightfrot/36332.html?nc=2) about a catholic high school in Sparta, New Jersey, that was banning Blogs for its students. The Diocesan newspaper's article is here (http://www.patersondiocese.org/page.cfm?Web_ID=1540). And a local paper the New Jersey Herald (http://www.njherald.com/4126690378272.php) also has done articles, among others (http://news.google.com/news?num=100&hl=en&lr=&as_ft=i&as_filetype=&as_dt=i&as_sitesearch=&as_rights=&tab=wn&ie=UTF-8&q=catholic+%22new+Jersey%22+high+school+blog).
