We-ell, it works via technorati. And technorati makes a ranking of blogs based on links towards your site. So based on the ranking you have in technorati, your blog gets a "price".
I think technorati doesn't count the links of friendslists. I don't know where I get linked by others, but I more or less frequently post as Frances in blogs outside LJ and provide a link back here. I think that's where my ranking and price come from.
