On Saturday the kitsch-lover in me was so delighted to see the Flemish public network decided to show the special for 50 years Eurovision Song Contest. Of course Waterloo was voted the best Eurovision song ever. There was no doubt Abba would win that contest. Not because they had the best song (it isn't even the best Abba-song), but because they became the biggest band the Eurovision Song Contest has ever seen and probably will ever see. Everyone knows Abba. Even Madonna and she hopes to become big again by more than leaning on a sample of them in her latest song. She'd better covered it.
Therefore not much excitement in this special. I don't mind that, because it isn't for the excitement of the voting that I watch, but for the silly costumes of the contestants, the stupid jokes of the hosts and the very first winner who's 81 now and still has one awesome voice.
Also seeing Nicole and Hugo dancing and singing in the same purple outfits from more than 30 years ago is great. Their outfits and song make it into every clip of memorable moments. They were last in 1973, but were remembered. It was great fun.
Like every big show, this one looked like it was made by choreographers that should have been sacked a long time ago and stylists that still live in the eighties, but that's the reason why we watch: to see how far you can take the kitsch, but still be entertaining.

Date: 2005-10-25 04:24 am (UTC)Eurovision contest can be fun to watch because of all the tings you pointed out (do you remember that time we watched it while posting on the C&S?)but my main problm with it is that they seem to be stuck to disco music and I really dislike disco. And concerning kitsch I'd rather Bollywood songs actually.
Yes I'm not a Abba fan. You're right everybody knows Abba.....like everybody knows Celine Dion nowadays! She almost won the Eurovision too btw.
There's only one Abba-song I can stand, it's "Dancing Queen" but I think it's because it's tied to certain movies that left me fond memories.
I got your email and will discuss it with Sandrine whom I'm dragging to see "Serenity" tonight (I didn't tell her I had already seen it btw!).

Date: 2005-10-25 09:09 am (UTC)I love Dancing Queen, but am even more fond of the pathos of The Winner Takes It All. Even Celine Dion can't sing it in such a heartfelt way as the ladies of Abba. ;-)
I do remember us discussing the Eurovision Song Contest once on the C&S. That was much fun! Unfortunately the computer isn't in the same room as the tv anymore since we moved. I'll have to nick P.'s laptop if I want to try something like that again.
Whatever you decide for your stay public transport is very good and P. and I own a car, so we'll be able to pick you up or drop you off somewhere if necessary.
