Sometimes things are different.
Aug. 17th, 2014 10:49 pmA couple of days ago the local commercial tv channel showed Good Morning Vietnam, as a tribute to the recently deceased Robin Williams. I sat ready to watch it, remembering I had enjoyed this film so much when I first saw it on the television, laughing so hard at Wiliams’ portrayal of a disk jockey doing his work far away in Vietnam. But I couldn’t laugh at it now. All the hurt and anger – that are so much part of this film – took the upper hand, and I switched channels, because I knew everything would go horribly wrong.
I never followed Robin Williams very closely. Apart from those films that established his name with me (aforementioned Good Morning Vietnam, Awakenings, and obligatory Dead Poets Society) I couldn’t get into his characters. They were all over the top for me. Trying to rematch Good Morning Vietnam with the added knowledge of what might have been the deeply dark origins of Williams’ comedy, I was overwhelmed with sadness for this person I never knew.
As always a simple day passes and things will never be the same again.
