So I've got this bunch of second graders and we're working on environmental education. I've told stories, we've talked much. Some of them have quite a good comprehension of environmental issues already, others prefer to throw their candy wrappers on the street. "Maybe I can learn them more with a game?" I think. There are loads of environmental games on the market, so the internet must be able to provide me with something interesting to use in class. Yes it does! Honoloko is an environmental game promoted by the EU. It comes in 26 different languages and has great animations. The children have to read questions and their answers have an impact on the island they live on. The animations are great and they get heaps of extra information. It's a win. And too difficult for my 7- and 8-year-olds.
Floepje is equally fun to watch and much more fun to play. The flying fish wanders around an environment under a snowbulb and you can play different games that teach you stuff about your own impact on the environment: don't throw stuff in the water, don't use too much energy at home. The kids don't have to read everything, because there's a voice-over telling you what to do. Aiming at ages 6 and 7, this game is indeed useful for my year two, whose knowledge of the Dutch language is limited. This one's a winner. If only I had computers and internet access in my class at school...
