Toys Are Us
Nov. 2nd, 2004 02:00 pm"What about this one?" He points at a turtle you can pull through the house on a string. It looks cool and drags two little turtles with it as well.
"Looks good," you say, pressing a button, pulling the string. Music. "No, it uses batteries, and the music is horrible."
Off to the next item. "This one," you point. Building blocks. It doesn't look so hard, but the box says "From 6 months on up".
"No," he says, "the kid can't grab the blocks. We want something she'll be able to play with at 3 months."
"And without batteries," you add, "Batteries are bad for the environment. We use too much energy already."
Standing in the middle of the aisle with infant toys the desperation starts to show on your faces. All the at first sight cool toys produce hideous sound and light effects, cost way too much and are ready to be thrown away after a month.
"What about this?" You point at something you know from when you were a child yourself. It produces sounds without batteries. It has nice, flashy colours. It's suitable for kids as young as 3 months.
"I like it!" he says, turning the box around, "But is it edible?"
